Tekken 7's New Yoshimitsu Design Looks Like an Octopus

Bandai Namco has released a trailer for another Tekken 7 fighter, Yoshimitsu, who's looking creepier than ever.

Yoshimitsu has received a lot of significant redesigns over the years, and he has a new look for Tekken 7 as well. It looks like he still has the same core move set, with his signature pogo stick-like hopping on the tip of his sword, but now he looks like a mix between an alien and an octopus.

Tekken 7 was announced last year. The game, which is powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 4, is already in Japanese arcades, but Bandai Namco has yet to announce when the game will hit other platforms in other territories.

For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Tekken 7.

'Castlevania' designer explains what made 'Symphony' so special

There's plenty I could say about Castlevania: Symphony of the Night but in the interest of time I'll keep it short and sweet: it's one of the most influential games ever made. Don't believe me? Eighteen years later, its core design conceit (read: explore a gigantic environment at will, uncovering hidden-in-plain-sight secrets in previously traversed areas thanks to a cascading set of power-ups that grant new abilities) is still being used today. So with that in mind, watching co-designer Koji "IGA' Igarashi offer commentary while Double Fine Productions' senior gameplay programmer Anna Kipnis plays through over two hours of the game in the latest Devs Play episode is an incredible treat. Oh, and there's blood-red wine involved because of course there is.

Star Citizen's FPS Module Will Be Better Than Typical Alpha at Launch, Dev Says

The Division Is Being Developed By Four Different Ubisoft Studios

Ubisoft has recruited another one of its studios to help develops the upcoming open-world third-person shooter The Division.

Ubisoft Annecy, which got its start working on Rayman 2 and previously worked on games like Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow and Assassin's Creed II's multiplayer mode, is now also working on the Division, Ubisoft has announced.

“The team in Annecy is delighted to be collaborating with Massive, Red Storm and Reflections on Tom Clancy’s The Division,” Ubisoft Annecy Studio Manager Rebecka Coutaz said. “We are bringing our previous experience in multiplayer online games and this project is allowing us to build our technical knowledge in other areas and become experts on this incredible brand. The collaboration with the other studios is going very smoothly, and we’re working together to ensure we meet and exceed the high expectations players have for this new title.”

The Division is being helmed by Massive Entertainment. We already knew it was getting help from developer Red Storm, which previously worked on games like Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and Reflections, which most recently worked on racing game The Crew.

The company didn't say what Ubisoft Annecy specific role will entail, but collaborating with the studio makes sense given The Division's emphasis on online multiplayer.

The Division launches this year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, though a specific release date has not been announced.

The dark side of competitive archery hits 'TowerFall' in May

TowerFall Ascension is a glorious little game. It shines as a local, competitive platformer, with players bounding around levels, shooting explosive arrows at each other, dodging and grabbing power-ups such as wings and shields. The first major expansion for TowerFall is called Dark World and it's due to hit PlayStation 4, Vita, PC, Mac and Linux on May 12 for $10, developer Matt Thorson announced today. This is a hefty expansion, adding four new level sets for versus mode, four-player co-op with four original boss fights and a new Legendary difficulty setting, 10 new playable archers, and two new arrow power-ups, Trigger Arrows and Prism Arrows. The fourth and final new level set is procedurally generated, meaning it will be different every time you play. "I have to thank TowerFall players for your patience and support while developing this expansion," Thorson writes. "It took a bit longer than we were expecting but we're thrilled with the result, and we can't wait to hear your feedback."

Watch Castlevania Producer IGA Play the Best Game in the Series

Koji Igarashi's long-running involvement with the Castlevania series started with 1997's Symphony of the Night, widely regarded as not only the franchise's best game, but also one of the best games of all time. If you've ever wanted to hear his thoughts while he plays through the game and sips red wine, you're in luck.

As part of Double Fine's Devs Play series where various game developers share their thoughts while playing games they either love and/or worked on, Igarashi--also known as IGA--sat down for some time with SotN. He's joined by Double Fine senior gameplay programmer Anna Kipnis, who describes SotN as her favorite game of all-time. The two take turns playing while Igarashi offers various thoughts over the course of two-plus hours.

Igarashi went on to contribute to more than a dozen other Castlevania games. He's currently working for Japanese company ArtPlay, which he says is trying to "create new experiences for mobile and consumer devices."

Here's What Helldivers' Free Update Tasks You With Doing

With a free update set to be released for Helldivers sometime "very soon," developer Arrowhead Game Studios has released a video highlighting some of the new things players will be doing when they're not busy shooting enemies.

The video is the first of several we'll be seeing ahead of the release of the free Turning Up the Heat expansion. This one focuses on three new objective types being added, one of which appears to be much different from those already in the game.

The artillery installation is first. You'll find a piece of artillery somewhere on the map that needs to be repaired and activated. Once that's been done, you'll need to gather three shells located nearby and deliver them to the gun, at which point you'll enter a series of d-pad inputs to fire the gun.

Second is the geological survey, which involves deploying a beacon that calls in a drill. This then becomes a standard defend objective; you'll protect the drill until it completes its work, at which point you'll collect the data it accumulates and move on.

Finally, we have the self-explanatory "search and disarm un-exploded ordnance" objective, which sounds much different from what's already in the game. This requires you to call in a mission-specific strategem, the ME-I Sniffer metal detector. With this equipped, you'll use the right stick to aim the metal detector while moving through an area, looking for bombs to disarm. This is done with the usual d-pad inputs, although whereas making a mistake with these inputs usually means starting over again, here it causes the bomb to explode, killing you.

We don't yet know everything included in Turning Up the Heat, but Arrowhead says the next video will be out "within a couple of days."

Helldivers was released in March for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita. For more, check out our review.

Rock Band 4 Instruments May Suffer Stock Shortages

Instruments for Harmonix Music Systems' Rock Band 4 may be difficult to acquire when the game is released later this year, according to studio CEO Steve Janiak.

Speaking to IGN, Janiak said "the response to our announcement of Rock Band 4 has been incredible" and has indicated a high level of demand for the upcoming rhythm game.

"Demand from both retailers and consumers for product has exceeded out expectations," explained Janiak, who advised fans to sign up to be alerted when pre-orders go live, which you can do here.

"While we'll do everything we can to meet demand, the realities of manufacturing and getting hardware on shelves means that we can't guarantee hardware for everyone on day one without a pre-order," he continued.

"For those looking for new instruments, pre-ordering ahead of launch will guarantee that you'll be able to start a band and rock the world with your family and friends this holiday season."

Rock Band 4's physical peripherals will be provided by Mad Catz, which has recently enjoyed success creating an official line of arcade sticks for Capcom's fighting games. Currently, only guitars, drums, and microphones are planned for release.

Harmonix has said the team is "working their asses off" to include Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 controller support on the new consoles.

"We are actively engaged with Sony and Microsoft to support PS3 controllers on the PS4 and Xbox 360 controllers on the Xbox One," it said.

"It's tough because a lot of the implementation is out of our control. You're dealing with radio chips and technology that fundamentally changed between one console and the next. There is some policy we need to work through as well as some nifty engineering we have to work through, which we are."

Harmonix officially confirmed Rock Band 4 in March and provided a vague 2015 release window for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Nintendo's New Membership Service Will Bridge 3DS, PC, Smart Devices, NX With Single Login

Nintendo's new "integrated membership service" will bridge the Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, PC, smart devices, and its in-development new console, codenamed NX, by implementing a common ID system.

A multi-device membership device was previously teased when Nintendo discussed NX, its successor to the Wii U. However, more information on the service was shared by Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata during a recent meeting with investors. Although Iwata didn't provide details, he gave a brief overview of what Nintendo is aiming for.

"The membership service will encompass multiple devices such as our existing Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, the dedicated game system NX, which is currently under development, smart devices and PCs," he explained.

"Our members will be able to visit Nintendo's website and log in with one ID, and they will receive various services including the ones based on their past purchases and gameplay records as well as services that will be an improved version of the current loyalty program."

According to Iwata, Nintendo plans to "offer advantages to consumers who use one ID across multiple devices."

The senior exec ended by saying the service, as a whole, will "make playing Nintendo games with game pals more fun regardless of which platform they are accessing."

To better leverage its IP, Nintendo's has entered into a deal with the global mobile games publisher DeNA to create "new gaming applications featuring Nintendo IP" for smart devices.

Mario Kart producer Hideki Konno has been placed in charge of Nintendo's mobile game development. During the financial briefing Nintendo also said it plans to release five smartphone titles by March 2017.

Nintendo recently announced a return to an annual profit for the first time in four years, revealing the company made a ¥41 billion ($350 million) profit for the fiscal year ending March 31.

As part of the earnings report the company also updated its launch schedule for upcoming Wii U games. Although it was previously expected to be available by the end of 2015, The Legend of Zelda for Wii U is now listed as "TBD."

Nintendo's first of many mobile games is coming this year

Nintendo has revealed some new details about its plan to develop mobile games. Most notably, its first smartphone title will come out later this year, and it's hoping to release four more before March 2017. That might sound fairly conservative -- five apps in just under two years isn't a particularly aggressive strategy. But Nintendo believes it's paramount that it takes a considered approach. "When we aim to make each title a hit, and because we want to thoroughly operate every one of them for a significant amount of time after their releases, this is not a small number at all," Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata said.

Destiny Dev Bungie Raises $400,000 (So Far) for Nepal Earthquake Relief

Konami’s Game Division Revenues Diminish But Company Reports Overall Increase

Metal Gear Solid publisher Konami has reported a net revenue increase of 0.3 percent over the previous year, as well as an increase in operating income of 87.8 percent.

However, Konami Digital Entertainment, the arm of the business principally associated with game development and publishing, posted a net revenue of ¥96,975 million (around $80,000), a decrease of 7.1 percent over its previous fiscal year. It is likely this decline can be attributed to the fact that it released fewer games and its shift in focus to mobile.

Mobile games were a key topic of analysis in its performance reports, with titles such as Jikkyou Pwafuru Puroyaku, Professional Baseball Dream Nine, the Crows x Worst series, Dragon Collection, and PES Manager highlighted for providing a stable income.

Discussing console games, Pro Evolution Soccer 2015, in particular the myClub mode's online payment system, was said to have performed well. Konami admits that, despite the release of other games, "the number of sold titles decreased" during the fiscal year.

Looking forward, smartphones and tablets are highlighted as an opportunity for the company to diversify and reach greater audiences, which Konami intends to exploit by developing "ways of playing games that match the characteristics of each device."

For console games, it is aiming toward including "sustained operation" modes that "utilize the operational expertise of mobile games." PES 2015's myClub is expected to continue contributing to profits.

Konami's expectations for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain weren't discussed in any detail, it instead opted to simply say the upcoming title has "garnered great response from home and abroad."

As expected, Konami did not address recent high-profile rumours of Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima's departure. Although Konami has not yet outright confirmed he has left, it is believed Kojima will depart following the release of Metal Gear Solid 5.

Konami has removed the Kojima Productions logo from official artwork for The Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes. It also removed references to titles being "A Hideo Kojima Game" from marketing material. The Kojima Productions logo was also removed from the Silent Hills/P.T. website, before Silent Hills was outright cancelled.

Mario Kart Producer To Head Up Nintendo's Mobile Game Development

Longtime Mario Kart producer Hideki Konno has been placed in charge of Nintendo's efforts in mobile game development, according to a report from Japanese business outlet Sankei.

Translated by Nintendo Everything, the report states the reveal was made by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata during the announcement of the company's latest financial reports. The information was provided as a brief update on the company's mobile development plans.

Although Konno was not named specifically, he has been producing the Mario Kart games since Mario Kart DS.

During the financial briefing, Nintendo also revealed it plans to release five smartphone titles by March 2017, and it is aiming to give each one significant staying power.

"Regarding the number of the titles, you may want to know that we will release approximately five titles by the end of the next fiscal year, which is the end of March 2017, said Iwata.

"You may think it is a small number, but when we aim to make each title a hit, and because we want to thoroughly operate every one of them for a significant amount of time after their releases, this is not a small number at all and should demonstrate our serious commitment to the smart device business."

As previously announced, Nintendo's has entered into a deal with the global mobile games publisher DeNA, which includes the creation of "new gaming applications featuring Nintendo IP, which [both companies] will develop specifically for smart devices."

As part of its partnership with Nintendo, DeNA acquired a 1.24 percent stake in Nintendo, with Nintendo buying 10 percent of DeNA.

Nintendo recently announced a return to an annual profit for the first time in four year, revealing the company made a ¥41 billion ($350 million) profit for the fiscal year ending March 31.

As part of the earnings report the company also updated its launch schedule for upcoming Wii U games. Although it was previously expected to be available by the end of 2015, The Legend of Zelda for Wii U is now listed as "TBD."

Halo: The Master Chief Collection Is "Black Eye For Us," Franchise Director Says

Halo: The Master Chief Collection has been described by Franchise Development Director Frank O'Connor as a "black eye" for series stewards 343 Industries.

Speaking to Xbox Achievements, O'Connor addressed the tumultuous launch of Microsoft's ambitious Halo anthology, which brought together improved versions of the first three games in the series into one package, but was unfortunately plagued by various matchmaking and other network issues.

"Halo: The Master Chief Collection is definitely a black eye for us," he said. "We're not going to rest on our laurels or hide from the mistake we made."

O'Connor went on to attribute some of the woes to the complexities of bringing multiple engines together and trying to make them work harmoniously, as well as the multi-studio development effort.

"I will say that the nature of The Master Chief Collection - you've got five different game engines, you've got different studios working on it, you've got 343 working on putting it all together - the footprint and complexity was outrageous."

Continuing, the 343 exec said having the game in the hands of players threw up hurdles that the studio "simply didn't see in a test environment."

O'Connor went on to provide assurances that the issues that contributed to The Master Chief Collection's problems would not be stumbling blocks for Halo 5: Guardians.

"Halo 5 is being made by a completely different team. It's a singular product," he said. "It was built from the ground up for this new technology, rather than being sort of dragged kicking and screaming from 2001 and forced and shoehorned into a 2014 console.

"The problem spaces are still very challenging but they're radically different. I think the beta is already a decent first step, in a retail environment, showing that we don't have the same problems."

The Halo 5 release date has been confirmed as October 27. Producer Josh Holmes recently confirmed that the game will use dedicated servers for all multiplayer, including custom games.

The Rockstar Editor is coming to 'GTA V' on consoles after all

Apparently "exclusive" doesn't mean what it used to anymore. Rockstar Games recently revealed that its eponymous video editing toolset is coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Grand Theft Auto V in a recent question and answer session pulled from its mailbag. Given the extra horsepower it requires, the Rockstar Editor won't surface on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but the team hopes to release it for new-gen systems this summer or "as soon as it is ready." So, maybe don't hold your breath for too long, but you never know.

Watch a Cheater's Character Stripped, Deleted by Guild Wars 2 Dev

Cheating in online games can get you banned--we all know that. Worse yet, it might get you (or your characters) humiliated, at least if the game is Guild Wars 2.
A thread (via Massively Overpowered) on the game's official forums recently popped up where players complained about a certain cheater, who appeared to be using hacks in-game. Worse yet, this character hadn't done so to simply get extra money or items they hadn't earned, but to use exploits in the game's competitive multiplayer mode. One person even provided video evidence of the cheater in question.
The discussion went without an official response for the better part of two weeks, but I dare say it was worth the wait. Game security lead Chris Cleary addressed the matter this week, writing, "We don't need to see it in-game, sometimes good video evidence is enough for me to track down who it was. In this case, the video was enough for me to find out who it was and take action. Thanks for the video, and to accompany your video, I give you this video of his account's last moments."
His post linked to the video above, which shows Cleary (or someone else at ArenaNet) logging into the cheater's account, stripping a character of his gear, and then jumping to his death in the middle of Divinity's Reach, a major city in the game. They then log out and proceed to delete the character, as well as one another.
Cleary added: "Oh yah, he's also banned."

A close look at the new, yet familiar guitar in 'Guitar Hero Live'

Tim Dunn and Nate Coppard are on a mission to rewire your brain. They're respectively the senior producer and senior designer behind Guitar Hero Live's new six-button guitar, and while neurological change is not their direct goal, it's a side effect they seem to relish. The new guitar has two rows of three buttons each, stacked on top of each other at the end of the neck -- this not only adds an extra button to the series, but it allows for fresh challenges. "It's not something people will be familiar with," Dunn says, glancing down at the Guitar Hero Live guitar in his hands. He taps some of the buttons. "It's a new thing."
Seated next to Dunn, Coopard adds, "We've had a lot of people saying they can feel their brains kind of adjusting and kind of rewiring to the new way of playing it as they play through the songs, and then gradually getting to grips with how the difficulty ramps up as you jump around between the two layers."%Gallery-slideshow285169%

Pokemon Still Tops Best-Selling 3DS Games List

With the release of its latest earnings report, Nintendo has provided an update to its list of best-selling games on 3DS. The Pokemon franchise continues to dominate the top of the charts, with two of the top four being Pokemon games despite them having been on the market for far less time than comparable sellers.

As has been the case since last year, Pokemon X/Y combined to be the best-selling 3DS game worldwide, with 13.85 million sales as of March 31, 2015. The number four spot is occupied by Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, which combined for 9.94 million units.

That's an impressive mark for Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, both because they are enhanced remakes of previous Pokemon games and because they've only been available since November 2014. That means these numbers account for just over four months of sales, and yet the game is quickly approaching Super Mario 3D Land (10 million since November 2011) and Mario Kart 7 (11.7 million since December 2011).

Pokemon X/Y, for comparison, made it to nearly 12 million in just about five months.

Here's the current list of top-selling 3DS software (as of March 31, 2015):

  1. Pokemon X/Y -- 13.85 million
  2. Mario Kart 7 -- 11.70 million
  3. Super Mario 3D Land -- 10.00 million
  4. Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire -- 9.94 million
  5. New Super Mario Bros. 2 -- 9.16 million
  6. Animal Crossing: New Leaf -- 8.94 million
  7. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS -- 6.75 million
  8. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon -- 4.48 million
  9. Tomodachi Life -- 4.15 million
  10. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D -- 3.70 million

These aren't the only 3DS games to top a million sales; The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, for instance, has already sold more than two million units, Nintendo revealed.

Nintendo also today announced that it posted a profit for the year ending March 31, the first time it's accomplished that in four years. 3DS family sales (including 2DS and New 3DS) reached 8.73 million for the year, bringing the lifetime total to 52.06 million.

GTA 5 Not Banning Players for Using Single-Player Mods

PS4 Getting Risen 3: Titan Lords Enhanced Edition

Deep Silver has announced an upgraded version of the Piranha Bytes-developed RPG Risen 3: Titan Lords will be released on the PlayStation 4.

The game was previously available on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Although it is now making its way to Sony's latest console, an Xbox One release has not been mentioned.

We contacted Deep Silver for clarification on its Xbox One plans for the game and it said "[Risen 3: Titan Lords] Enhanced Edition is confirmed for PS4 (only) at this time."

Risen 3: Titan Lords Enhanced Edition includes all post-release updates, as well as the Adventure Grab, Fog Island, and Uprising of the Little Guys DLCs.

According to its publisher, the graphical quality of the PS4 release is comparable to the Ultra setting on the original version for PC. In some areas, such as the resolution of textures and post-processing effects such as depth of field and HDR bloom, it surpasses the PC version. A new volumetric cloud system has also been added to enhance the presentation of sunsets in the dynamic day-night cycles.

The PlayStation 4 version runs at 1080p at 30 frames per second. It will also support Remote Play, streaming, recording, and Share Play.

ESO: Tamriel Unlimited Trailer Gives the Elevator Pitch for Console Release

Bethesda has released a new trailer for Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited offering a glimpse at the gameplay opportunities the MMO offers.

The trailer provides an overview of the game’s story, which casts players as the The Vestige, a murdered prisoner who returns to life and finds the Aldmeri Dominon, Ebonhart Pact, and Daggerfall Covenant locked in a civil war.

Gameplay for the Dragonknight, Sorcerer, Templar, and Nightblade classes is also shown, before the trailer delves into character progression and questing.

In January Bethesda announced it would no longer charge a mandatory subscription fee to play Elder Scrolls Online, instead adopting a one-time fee to buy the game. The company also confirmed Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited’s Xbox One and PS4 release date as June 9.

Tamriel Unlimited will feature all the content from original game "plus all the updates and content additions, including the exciting new Justice and Champion systems."

Bethesda has created ESO Plus for those that want to continue paying a regular fee for the game. Exclusive in-game bonuses and a monthly allotment of Crowns to use in the store, as well as access to all DLC game packs, are provided for paying the subscription.

Bethesda is hosting its own press conference at E3 for the first time this year, seemingly indicating that it has more to show than normal. Rumours of Fallout 4 development have been circulating for a number of years. In April 2013, Bethesda confirmed the Skyrim development team is moving onto its next big project, further intensifying speculation that a Fallout 4 announcement is impending.

'Guild Wars 2' cheater faces public humiliation before ban

DarkSide faces final disgrace before ban
Most cheaters in online role-playing games face an ignominious end. The developers ban them, and that's all she wrote. Not one particularly egregious Guild Wars 2 offender, however. When game developer ArenaNet finally took action against a hacker who had been terrorizing player-versus-player battles for weeks, the security team decided that some public humiliation was in order. It stripped one of the player's characters naked, jumped this persona off a ledge, and proceeded to delete every character linked to the account -- all recorded for posterity on video, as you can see below.

Wasteland 2 Game of the Year Edition Is a Free Upgrade on PC

inXile Entertainment has announced existing owners of Wasteland 2 on the PC will be upgraded to the upcoming Game of the Year Edition for free.

"We wanted to re-affirm our gratitude to our backers and our dedication to RPG fans, as we have been most fortunate to return to our roots," said inXile CEO Brian Fargo.

Wasteland 2's crowdfunding campaign launched on Kickstarter with a goal of $900,000, but managed to accrue a total of $2,933,252 in pledges.

According to its developer, Wasteland 2 Game of the Year Edition will include a number of improvements. In terms of gameplay changes, Wasteland 2 Game of the Year Edition will offer new Perks & Quirks that can be used to customize Desert Rangers. Each addition will come with its own set of bonuses and sacrifices.

In combat, individual body parts can now be targeted thanks to the new Precision Strike system. By focusing on specific body parts players can get the tactical edge and inflict grievous damage. Game balance, item drops, and combat encounters have also been tweaked.

Additionally, the game has been ported to Unity 5, allowing it to benefit from improved character models, environment textures, better lighting, and Physically Based Rendering. New lines of voice-over have also been recorded for the re-release.

In March it was announced that Wasteland 2: Game of the Year Edition was coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

InXile is also working on The Bard's Tale IV, which will have its own crowdfunding campaign later this year.

'Snake Rewind' modernizes the Nokia game for touchscreen devices

Snake -- that addictive, reflex-testing mobile game on old Nokia brick phones -- is attempting a comeback. A version for modern smartphones and tablets called Snake Rewind will be released on May 14th by game developer Rumilus Design and Taneli Armanto. The latter's the Nokia engineer who preloaded it on the 6110 back in 1997 and the one you can blame for all those wasted hours and bouts of Snake-induced rage. For the young'uns who have no idea what it's about: the game gives you control of a slithering serpent during feeding time. You'd have to get its mouth in the same line as its pixel food, often by twisting and contorting its continuously elongating body using the keyboard. It might sound lame described like that, but over a decade ago, it occupied the throne Candy Crush is sitting on.

Nintendo Returns to Full-Year Profit For First Time in Four Years

Nintendo has announced it made a ¥41 billion ($350 million) profit for the fiscal year ending March 31, returning the company to an annual profit for the first time in four years.

According to its latest fiscal report, global sales of the Nintendo 3DS family, which includes the 2DS, reached 8.73 million units. The New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL were said to have "got off to a good start and continued to sell well." Previous models, however, "did not grow as anticipated."

Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS reached 9.94 million units and 6.8 million units respectively. Nintendo described the performance of these two titles as "robust."

Meanwhile, Tomodachi Life, Mario Kart 7, and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, meanwhile, showed steady sales, each selling more than two million units. Overall, Nintendo 3DS software for the fiscal year reached 62.7 million units.

Global sales of Wii U hardware reached 3.38 million units, while software was cited as 24.4 million units. Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U had sales of 5.11 million units and 3.65 million units respectively.

Looking forward, Nintendo’s outlook for the fiscal year of 2016 involves maintaining the performance of currently available games that have strong sales potential. Additionally, it intends to continue releasing new games to expand its install base. Delivering more downloadable content for Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U is one of the ways Nintendo is aiming to keep its more popular games active.

Specific details on the performance of Amiibos were not provided, but new waves of traditional figures as well as Amiibo cards and yarn-knitted Amiibo will be used to stimulate demand. An NFC reader and writer accessory for all Nintendo 3DS and 2DS will also be released.

Along with this, the company expects Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, a new Rhythm Tengoku, the new Fire Emblem, and “a number of key titles from third-party publishers” to contribute to attaining its projected operating profit of ¥50 billion (around $420 million) and net profit of ¥35 billion (around $290 million).

Three new Nintendo 3DS bundles have been announced for Europe. Nintendo also recently apologized for Amiibo shortages and promised to communicate better with fans on supply information.

Capcom's Full Year Revenue Down, Digital Delivery Highlighted As Key Focus Going Forward

Resident Evil and Street Fighter publisher Capcom has announced that the company’s revenue was down 37.1 percent from the previous year.

During its latest fiscal year, which ended March 31, Capcom made ¥64.3 billion ($538.4 million). This figure represents Capcom’s lowest yearly revenue figure since 2004, when it generated ¥52.7 billion.

In its official financial review Capcom highlighted sales of Monster Hunter 4G and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate as a key success.

In February, Capcom revealed more than three million copies of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate had been shipped worldwide, while total franchise sales had reached 32 million units.

On the digital front, Ultra Street Fighter 4’s sales were described as "solid". Resident Evil Revelations 2, which only became available in February, was said to have made a "strong start." Dead Rising 3 was also mentioned as a successful title, however, this game was released in Capcom’s previous fiscal year.

Digitally delivered content was spotlighted as a major focus during the fiscal year as Capcom attempts to diversify distribution channels. The company has indicated it will continue to dedicate itself to this strategy and expects it will "deliver a sustainable growth going forward."

By its own admission, Capcom did not have many major titles released on mobile devices, but profitability in this department was improved thanks to an "overhaul of the profit structure."

Elsewhere in the business, Capcom reported its operating income has increased 2.7 percent from the previous fiscal year, likely as a result of streamlining production costs and increasing general efficiency. Net income overall was ¥6.6 million, which is an increase of 92.1 percent from the previous year.

Capcom’s biggest upcoming projects include Street Fighter V, which has been announced as exclusive to PlayStation 4 on consoles. Although it is believed to be an ongoing project, very little has been seen of Deep Down since its announcement.

Nintendo is finally making money again

Nintendo recorded its first annual profit since 2011 today. Its final results for 2014 (technically April 1st 2014 to March 31st 2015) reveal a $207 million operating profit on $4.6 billion in revenue. That's nothing to write home about, and way lower than initially expected, but still represents a dramatic improvement from previous years' consecutive losses. The past three months have actually seen a pretty heavy negative swing for Nintendo, with the international launch of new-and-improved 3DS models failing to make much of an impact, and the Wii U continuing to languish in 3rd place behind the PS4 and the Xbox One.

Xbox One rumor claims DVR is coming to replace Media Center

Xbox One Revealed
Even as Microsoft buries Windows Media Center, there's a rumor that it actually does have a plan for a replacement. According to Paul Thurrott's sources, the Xbox One will gain the ability to record live TV "probably this year." That's the kind of feature Microsoft originally envisioned for its all-in-on game console, but so far does not offer. The live TV tuner that's available in Europe and coming to North America offers some trick play pause/rewind support, but full DVR functionality would be a big shift. The PlayStation 4 has a DVR for subscribers of to the Vue TV service, but that's relatively expensive and only available in a few areas so far. Proper DVR support combined with that antenna (and hopefully, cable TV access for the people who haven't cut the cord yet), could provide a more flexible option. Of course, if anyone has the technology prepared to roll out it should be Microsoft, but we'll have to wait and see when/if it comes to fruition.

Zynga Cutting 364 Jobs in Major Restructuring

Using 'Dark Souls 2' mods on PC? That's a dealbreaker

The Dark Souls series' relationship with PC gamers has been contentious at best. The vanilla versions of the first two games weren't unplayable per se, but if it weren't for the enterprising community of modders around the franchise it'd look and run kind of, well, crappy. This apparently extends to the recently released Scholar of the First Sin as well. But there's a twist this time: Players installing the popular "DS2fix" softmod that addresses weapons durability glitches and save corruptions have found that they aren't able to easily summon other players into their game for help or adversarial combat. As Kotaku reports, the players aren't hacking in a nefarious way, they're just using a patch that makes the game work better on their platform of choice. Instead of pulling "undead" (how the series refers to its protagonists) from a general population, it's grabbing them from a comparatively smaller pool of other players that've been deemed cheaters for using DS2fix.

Destiny Breaking up Nightfall and Weekly Heroic Strikes

On big change coming to Destiny following the release of the House of Wolves expansion later this month will add more variety to the game's Strike missions. Bungie revealed during a roundtable interview with GameSpot that, going forward, the Nightfall and Weekly Heroic Strikes will take place on different maps.

In addition, you're more likely to see a House of Wolves Strike for the Nightfall or the Weekly in the first couple weeks after the expansion launches. After that, the maps will return to a normal rotation.

Bungie also revealed that to upgrade non-Exotic armor/weapons to parity, you will need Etheric Light. This will elevate your new armor to the current maximum Light Level and your weapons to maximum damage for year one. You'll be able to get Etheric Light from the Nightfall Strikes as a supplementary drop, so it should not take away your chance at a Legendary or Exotic.

What happens after year one? Right now, Bungie isn't talking further details, but we should learn more soon.

Destiny: Everything You Need to Know About House of Wolves

Why Are There No Raids in Destiny's House of Wolves?

Following last week's Trials of Osiris information avalanche, today Bungie revealed new details about the PvE portion of Destiny's upcoming House of Wolves expansion.

One of the biggest points of contention has been the lack of a new Raid. While the Horde Mode-like Prison of Elders will take its place, Bungie creative director Christopher Barrett said in a roundtable discussion, "I love raids. I loved playing raids, I love that kind of content. We have teams working on raids, but for House of Wolves, we wanted to focus on something that was more replaybale, something that had more variety. A different type of challenge, so it was exciting for us to create that new kind of activity."

He explained that the team wanted to "add to the kinds of activities that were in the game." He said, "You've got the Raiding experience and also this new kind of experience that we didn't have before. It was interesting for us to try and create that kind of new gameplay challenge. But hopefully it's just as challenging as the Raid content. We also wanted to have both PvE and a PvP endgame experience that could reward you with as interesting loot. That best PVP players in the world would be running around in the gear that they can only get in that mode."

Destiny lead designer Matt Sammons added that they wanted to add content that could appeal to both the "causal player and the really hardcore player."

"The bosses have these mechanics that would be sort of familiar to Raid players, but we have more of them than just the one that you played today," Sammon said. "There's six total. We think that in terms of endgame content it's going to have a lot of legs."

Since Bungie is still working on new Raids, does that mean they might be available in House of Wolves as an add-on later? Sammons clarified, "The endgame for House of Wolves consists of Prison of Elders, Trials of Osiris, and that's all. There are Raids being worked on, still, but we're not talking about them today."

Bungie is hosting a livestream for the House of Wolves expansion today where we hope to learn more about the new modes before its launch on May 19.

Watch The Witcher 3's Monsters Explained In This Dev Diary

CD Projekt Red has released a new developer diary video that dives into the monsters you'll face in its upcoming role-playing game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

As with previous games in the series, you'll have an easier time taking down monsters if you learn a little about them first from in-game books and use the right tools for the job. Unlike previous Witcher games, however, it sounds like tracking these creatures will be a more interesting process, as CD Projekt Red created complex creature behavior and ecosystem that allows them to move freely through the game's huge open world.

"Designing these creatures is a collaborative process between the character concept and the animation departments," CD Projekt Red secondary lead character artist Bill Daly said. "We start by trying to visualize the anatomy of the creatures and ask ourselves if this is something that could actually exist. They're fantastical creatures, but we don't want them to defy the laws of physics."

Digital copies of Witcher unlock on May 19 at 1 AM CET, which means gamers in the United States can actually start playing at 4 PM PDT / 7 PM EDT on May 18. Boxed copies arrive May 19.

GameSpot recently visited The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red's offices in Poland. Check out this roundup of our previous coverage from the trip, which includes exclusive interviews with key developers and even more gameplay footage, among other things.

Destiny Dev Bungie Trademarks The Taken King

DirectX 12 Unlocks More PC Power From Integrated GPUs

Microsoft has detailed a new DirectX 12 API feature that can provide an increase in game performance by using integrated GPUs alongside dedicated graphics cards.

The feature, called Multiadapter, provides the option to draw resources from a motherboard's integrated GPU as well as the standalone graphics card at the same time.

"Before Windows 10 and DirectX 12, all the performance potential from the second GPU goes unused," Microsoft’s Andrew Yeung explained on the DirectX Developer Blog. "[Now] application developers can use every GPU on the system simultaneously."

"We recognized that most mixed GPU systems in the world were not making the most out of the hardware they had," it continued. "We set out to enable separable and contiguous workloads to be executed in parallel on separate GPUs."

Microsoft explained the advantage Multiadapter provided by using postprocessing as an example: "Virtually every game out there makes use of postprocessing to make your favourite game visually impressive; but that postprocessing work doesn’t come free," the company said.

"By offloading some of the postprocessing work to a second GPU, the first GPU is freed up to start on the next frame before it would have otherwise been able to, improving overall framerate."

The announcement comes weeks after speculation suggesting that DirectX 12 could allow PC users to harness the power of multiple GPUs from different companies, such as AMD and Nvidia. While the Multiadapter feature is similar in principal, it appears that it only applies to mixing an integrated GPU with a graphics card. It is not clear whether DirectX 12 will allow users to mix graphics cards.

Nvidia recently announced it is bundling The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Batman: Arkham Knight for free with its GTX 970 and GTX 980 graphics cards.

Oculus Rift goes mainstream early 2016

Quarter one 2016. It's the answer to a question we've asked basically every time we've spoken with Oculus VR since 2012: "When does the consumer version of the Rift come out?" Aside from that revelation, the only additional information we have is that pre-orders start sometime later this year. And that's it! No word on price or launch games, experiences or Facebook apps, either. Come to think of it, "no" probably fits as an answer to any other question you might have at this point. Oculus teased that they'll have more to share soon, specifically hinting at June's Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3), but for now we'll just have to make do with these morsels. If Sony hoped to have early 2016 to itself in terms of VR for the masses with Project Morpheus, those dreams have effectively been dashed.

EA Reveals 80 Percent of Battlefield Hardline Sales Were For PS4/Xbox One

Electronic Arts has revealed sales figures surrounding its cops-and-robbers themed first-person shooter, Battlefield Hardline. Speaking at an earnings call earlier today, EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said, "approximately four out of every five copies of Battlefield Hardline sold for consoles were for Xbox One or PlayStation 4," and dubbed the transition to the current generation of consoles as "much faster growth than in previous generations."

EA chief executive officer Andrew Wilson also added that the company expected close to 50 million current-generation consoles to be sold by the end of the year. Sony recently announced that it had shipped 22.3 million PlayStation 4 units for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015. By comparison, Microsoft revealed in November last year that the company had shipped a total of 10 million console units, although this figure combines figures for both Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles.

The company reported earnings for its fourth quarter and fiscal year ended March 31, reporting increases in profit and revenue, outlining its release schedule for the coming year, and confirming that Titanfall 2 would not be released anytime soon.

The clone that won't disappear: 'Threes' vs. '2048' on Google Play

>
Google removed the quirky puzzle game Threes from the Play store on Tuesday. Its removal was unceremonious and sudden, but that's not exactly why Threes creator Asher Vollmer found the situation frustrating. That came down to two reasons:
  1. A robot informed Vollmer that his game was removed from Google Play in a cold, automated message.
  2. Threes was removed from Google Play because it used "2048" as a keyword -- and 2048 is a blatant, known clone of Threes.
Google -- probably a human there, not a robot -- reinstated Threes after just a few hours offline and following a stream of articles and Twitter activity around its removal. Of course, 2048 remained live on Google Play the entire time, alongside a bunch of other Threes clones. This string of events highlights one of the biggest differences between Google and Apple, and how they approach their app stores. "Apple's policies are preventative and Google's policies are retroactive," Vollmer says. "You can probably figure out which one I prefer."
